If you follow me on twitter, you should already know how I feel about EDM. To me, it’s just an acronym that encompasses everything that is related to Electronic Dance Music. This EDM craze rose quickly in 2012 with a plethora of people jumping on the bandwagon to keep their “cool” factor. There are 2 sides that support the EDM phenomenon : 1 side claims it’s the new “house music” era (which it will never be) and the other sees it as the “go to” music genre that every music artist need to be part of to stay relevant. My roots are in house music and I have had zero interest in being part of this EDM thing. Let’s explore some of this EDM bandwagon you ride with…
An example of what EDM means to the masses : Billboard has been listing a weekly EDM chart on their website. Although it doesn’t specifically say “EDM”, it does say Dance Electronic Songs (which essentially means the same thing). Will.I.Am & Britney Spears has been dominating that chart for weeks. Baauer just recently took the top spot this week. You know what else has been on that chart forever?…Gangnam Style. Yes, Gangnam Style is EDM, just like LMFAO and Pitbull. Is this music fun in the clubs? Yes. Do that masses like it? Yes. Is it as underground as EDM purists think? I would probably say no.
Now here’s where the fun part of EDM gets better. Just recently Bret Michaels (from the group Poison and reality dating show on VH1) has jumped on the EDM bandwagon. After seeing a pic on twitter, I came across this article on ultimateclassicrock.com that broke it down. You can read it here. Within the article, there is a link to his myspace. Guess what is on his myspace…his EDM track. You know who else just made an EDM track? Courtney Stodden. I’m sure there will be more EDM artists emerging in 2013. If you support EDM as much as you say, you should be playing these tracks and be proud of your genre.
I think those 2 examples can summarize what EDM means to me. So whenever you mention EDM (or hashtag it on twitter), you already know what I am thinking. You kids enjoy that EDM stuff, I will stick to house music…
